2025: 20 years and a new licensing cycle

In 2024 Electrão had the privilege of seeing its activity in the management of three of the recycling systems in which it participates renewed through the publication of the new licenses: packaging; batteries and used electrical equipment.

Message from the director-general of electrics and batteries

The selective collection of electrical equipment reached a new high in 2024. This year, Electrão collected and sent more than 36,000 tons of used electrical equipment for recycling. This is an increase of 31% compared to 2023, when more than 27,000 tons were collected.

Awareness and education play an essential role in Electrão’s work, which promotes various campaigns aimed at different audiences. The goal is to reach citizens, increase awareness about the importance of adopting more sustainable practices, and ensure the proper disposal of waste for recycling. At the same time, in all its actions, Electrão seeks to close the loop, contributing positively to the community.

Challenges of 2025

The past year was marked by the launch of a new 10-year licensing cycle, but also by a series of challenges, notably operational constraints in the electrical equipment stream, namely insufficient treatment capacity among national operators and delays in Transboundary Waste Movements, alongside the failure to meet the 65% packaging recycling target and Portugal’s position in the European ranking, in 21st place, below the EU average, with landfills approaching their maximum capacity limits.
